Blindside, written by a former Navy legal officer, is the story of Commander Neal Olen, 44, an intelligence officer who faces charges of adultery and possibly leaking secrets. It is an insider's look at the archaic and potentially crushing machinery of military justice. Olen's troubles begin in 1999 when he is recognized as the officer on whom a fictional character is based in a salacious, tell-all novel. Its author is a woman with whom he had a weekend affair five years earlier while separated from his wife. Information about the nation's reconnaissance satellites somehow found its way into her novel. Olen finds himself a pawn of the author, hoping to hype her book and the Navy, eager to make an example of him in its push for "zero tolerance" of sex scandals and for airtight security on intelligence information. He grapples with the ethical dilemma: When caught in an unjust system, is honesty still a virture?

Reviews for Blindside
Lane's characters are well drawn in a taut courtroom thriller reminiscent of Joseph Finder's terrific "High Crimes."
Lev Raphael
Knight Ridder Newspapers
A pleasing combination of Wouk, Grisham, and Clancy, a military courtroom drama with attention to detail, crafted by one who knows....The plot works with just enough sex, violence, and surprising turns, the characters are real enough, and the prose is nicely crafted. And weighing in at less than a pound, it is a good choice for a long airplane flight.
John Lehman, author of On the Seas of Glory
The Philadelphia Inquirer
Using his background as a 20-year Navy legal-eagle, Lane adds prefectly credible soul-searching to creat an honest and heartfelt courtroom drama of agenda-driven military intransigence at odds with personal integrity.
Kirkus
The subject matter is tantalizing and Lane keeps the story moving at a steady pace
Publishers Weekly
An exciting courtroom suspense story, solidly grounded in the author's knowledge of military trial procedure....The swift pace and appealing characters draw readers into the little-known world of military justice
Judith Wynn
Boston Herald
A sold...achievement that verifies that Lane has a real gift for depicting the U.S. Navy's legal system at its best and worst.
Roland Green
Booklist, (American Library Association)
This topical story...compels when it describes the court material.
Robert Conroy
Library Journal
A powerfully written and compelling tale.
