Her parents met and married while studying in the former USSR where after completing their studies they lived for 3 years in Al Yarmook refugee camp in Syria. After which they moved to settle in a village in Lebanon, where Samar was born. There Samar grew up until 10 years of age when her family immigrated to Canada. Samar completed a BSc in Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Alberta and also received a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from NAIT. She is currently employed at the Provincial Laboratory of Alberta as a Medical Lab Tech Tali Shapiro is an Israeli solidarity activist, taking part in Palestinian demonstrations in the Ramallah area and the villages of Nabi Saleh and Bil'in, in the West Bank. She's also part of the Israeli BDS group BOYCOTT! Supporting the Palestinian BDS Call from Within . The group gives voice to the marginalized minority of Israel's citizens who acknowledge the colonisation of Palestine by the zionist project, and takes part in many BDS campaigns with a particular focus on cultural and academic boycott. Huwaida Arraf is a Palestinian-American lawyer and human rights advocate. She received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, and her Juris Doctor from the American University Washington College of Law, where she focused her studies on international human rights and humanitarian law. In 2001 Huwaida co-founded the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), which has twice been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Huwaida is co-editor of the book Peace Under Fire: Israel, Palestine, and the International Solidarity Movement. Huwaida was one of the initiators and organizers of a delegation of American lawyers to Gaza in February 2009, and co-authored the report on their findings, Onslaught: Israel's Attack on Gaza and the Rule of Law. Huwaida is the former Chairperson of the Free Gaza Movement. Since August 2008, she has led 5 successful sea voyages to the Gaza Strip to confront and challenge Israel's illegal blockade. Huwaida was one of the primary organizers of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and was traveling with it when it was lethally attacked by Israeli forces on 31 May 2010. In 2012 Huwaida helped conceive of and launch the Witness Bahrain initiative, an effort to provide human rights observers on the ground in Bahrain, where an uprising for democracy is being violently repressed. She was arrested by Bahraini authorities and deported for her work. Dr. James Cairns is Associate Professor of Society, Culture, and Environment at Wilfrid Laurier University in Brantford, ON. He is active in Faculty for Palestine, and the co-author of two books (with Dr. Alan Sears): A Good Book, In Theory: Making Sense Through Inquiry, and The Democratic Imagination: Envisioning Popular Power in the 21st Century. Dr. Susan Ferguson is Associate Professor of Digital Media and Journalism, and of Youth and Children's Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Brantford, ON. She is active in Faculty for Palestine, and has published on Canadian political discourse, public broadcasting and social reproduction feminism. Yasmeen Abu-Laban is Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Alberta. She has published widely on issues relating to the Canadian and comparative dimensions of gender, ethnicity and racialization processes, border and migration policies, and citizenship theory. She is the co-editor of Surveillance and Control in Israel/Palestine: Population, Territory, and Power (with Elia Zureik and David Lyon); co-editor of Politics in North America: Redefining Continental Relations (with Radha Jhappan and Francois Rocher); and editor of Gendering the Nation-State: Canadian and Comparative Perspectives. Sherene Razack is a full professor in the Department of Social Justice Education, at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. He is recognized as one of the top Immigration and refugee lawyers in Canada. He also served as the Associate Editor for Immigration Law Reporter (2007-2011) and as the Associate Editor of ImmQuest (2007-2011). Ed has published numerous articles on Immigration and Refugee law. His academic area of expertise is the Middle East and he has published many articles in academic publications including Middle East Policy, Middle East International, Outlook and Z Magazine.
