Hardcover. " Secker & Warburg, 1976, 1st edn. with dust cover in fine condition; brown cloth in mint condition; vi+304pp; In his third novel Christy Brown returns to his native Dublin. Luke Sheridan, reporter on a Dublin evening newspaper, dreams of writing 'the Great Irish Novel', but at the moment is preoccupied by the sudden departure of his current mistress. He seeks solace and sex in the brothel run by the remarkable Madame Lala. There he encounters Rosie, and despite the vigorous efforts of her rival Babysoft to sidetrack him, takes her to bed. Months later he runs into Babysoft in a bar where he has stopped on his way to the seaside town of Howth with his friend, the taxi cab driver Ranter. Luke has been sent by his blustering employer Mulligan to investigate an attempted murder involving a German count; Babysoft cadges a lift. Thereafter the fun is fast and furious, involving the count, a malformed giant spouting broken English; his alleged sister, the lascivious Sonny; their maid of all work Agatha, a virago destined to be vanquished by Babysoft; the madcap Gothic ruin in which the baron lives, and the horseback arrival of Mulligan in search of the errant Luke, who, pursued alike by Babysoft and Sonny, has failed to file his story. In the end the whole cast, except Mulligan who is left anaesthetized in a pub, ends up chez Madame Lala, and Luke retrieves his Rosie, not pregnant as Babysoft had maintained after all. WILD GROW THE LILIES is bawdy and hilarious, redolent of the Dublin underworld. It is shot through too with Christy Brown's gift for lyrical descriptive prose. A farce with sentimental overtones, it is highly entertaining reading. 8¾x5½"". "
