Best known for the distinctive style of his dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History and other museums, Francis Lee Jaques was also a painter and illustrator whose elegant black-and-white drawings appeared in over 30 books about wildlife adn nature. This book, a biographical essay illustrated with his own drawings and paintings, is a lucid examination of his work within the context of American nature painting. In his foreword, Roger Tory Peterson says, “His dioramas and canvases are a sensitive and joyous celebration of the wild world - a record of the way it was in his time.”

Donald T. Luce earned an undergraduate degree in zoology and a masters in medical and biological illustration at the University of Michigan. He is assistant curator of exhibits at the James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History, University of Minnesota. Laura M. Andrews, who has a masters degree in art history and museology from the University of Minnesota, is assistant curator at Minnesota’s University Gallery.
