Broadside. "Four Page Poetry Broadside. 19 x 28 cm. Published in London by The Poetry Bookshop. Contains 6 black, white and blue illustrations of the World War One pursuit of two German ships; the Goeben and the Breslau, by the Gloster. The German ships evaded the British fleet and arrived in Constantinople, where the Goeben was made flagship of the Ottoman navy. Hardback. 176pp. This is a very nice copy, bound in quarter leather with marbled boards, raised bands and gilt to front and spine. Sir Arthur Clarke (1778-1857) was a St. Andrews medical graduate. He practiced in Dublin where he was a Physician to the Bank of Ireland and founder of the Dublin Fever Hospital. He was elected F.R.C.S. in 1844. His several popular medical treatises include: 'A practical manual for the preservation of health and the prevention of diseases incidental to the middle and advanced stages of life' (1824) and 'Lecture on sea-bathing (1828). A not on verso of the half-title reads "The Profits arising from the sale of this Work, will be appropriated to the Relief of the Starving Poor of the West and South of Ireland." The book was published in the middle of the great Irish Famine. A wonderful copy of a scarce and unusual book.
