In South Wales 70,000 iron workers were on strike as employers demanded a 10 per cent wage cut. A century ago the Bank rate fluctuated from 4%% in June to 9% in November. The price of coal was 37s 1 d per ton, the Derby was won by Doncaster and the boat race by Cambridge.
