Hardcover. 1st edition. Errata (2 lines) on p. [8]. 180 p. 17 cm. Bookplate on inside cover, Ex Libris. Contemporary cloth-backed boards. Binding a little loose. Light spotting, occasionally not so light. Covers a little rubbed. Antiquarian. The author specifically points out to the reader in his introduction that his narrative confines itself more especially to a consideration of natural objects, and the incidental events of travel. He sailed from New York for the Mediterranean, visiting Naples, Palermo, Syracuse, Malta, Messina, the Vulcanian Islands, before returning to Naples. He seems to studiously avoid what he terms artificial wonders. In the penultimate chaper he recounts the tale of an earlier visit to Scotland where he fell in company with another traveller obsessed with often macabre stories of people being buried alive. Some of these tales the author recounts in this chapter
