Meic Stephens was born in Trefforest, Pontypridd, in 1938. Educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He taught in Ebbw Vale for several years before becoming a journalist with the Western Mail. He founded the magazine Poetry Walesin 1965 and was its editor for eight years.
