Hardback. Published 1728 [1729]. Richard Mead, celebrated book-collector, classical scholar and student of Utrecht and Leyden became one of the outsanding physicians of his day. He provided the financial means for Samuel Buckley to prepare an extensive new edition, in seven volumes, of Jacques Auguste Thou's "Historiarum sui Temporis". In 1724 he purchased some papers originating in de Thou's archives from the historian, Thomas Carte, then a refugee in France. Mead paid Buckley to edit the papers and produce the work. The present pamphlet, to use modern terminology, is a progress report on the enterprise. A number of copies are recorded without the final leaf and are assumed to be complete as Buckley's signature dated 1 Jan 1728 appears at the foot of page 38. However, these two important final pages contain the text of his letter to Richard Mead of March 30th 1729. 1st Edition. pp40. Rebound in contemporary-style panelled-calf, with gilt lettering on the spine. A fine copy.

Paperback. [John Almon] 5th Edition. 4to. 51pp. Without the half-title. Rebound in morocco backed marbled boards, v. good condition. Seemingly the first tract to publicly announce Jenkinson's infatuation with an eighteen year girl thirty-six years his junior. John Almon, a successful bookseller and journalist, retired in 1781 after selling his business to John Debrett. His retirement was short-lived and he returned to publishing and journalism three years later. The present tract, much of it concerning America, was first published the same year. Interestingly Almon refers to Jenkinson's .amorous daliance after Miss A. It was no doubt ludicrous to see a tall thin old man of 54, over head and ears in love with a girl of 18. As yet we can find no other contemporary reference to this affair. Not in Sabin

Hardcover. 'To which is added, an adventure in the Champs Elises, near Paris; also an interesting account of the unfortunate disaster which befel Monsieur Pilatre de Rozier at Boulogne; with a translation of the elegant eulogium upon him, by the Marquis de Maisonfort: With abstracts from the registers of the Parliament of Paris; Containing a year's list of Criminals Sentenced at Paris; With the nature of their crimes and punishments; translated from his French." Original calf, at sometime well re-backed. Red block label, gilt cross bands. Edges a little rubbed, else a very nice copy. Minor stain to top outer margin of first few leaves, small library stamp to f.e.p. Pilatre de Rozier was the first human to ascend in a balloon, a feat he accomplished in 1783. In 1785 he determined to cross the channel from Boulogne to England in a balloon built and owned by Romaine, who was his companion. In June he deemed conditions to be right for the ascent and crossing, but many thought the place of departure inappropriate. The balloon ascended and stayed aloft for about half an hour before it caught fire, blew up and fell to earth. The description of the state of the two bodies is somewhat gruesome. Extremely scarce, as few as two recorded copies in Ireland and Britain
