Hardback. The Great Famine. An Gorta Mor. 19th Century Ireland. Poor Laws. Incredibly important primary source material for Irish history. These parliamentary papers, in 3 volumes, deal with the Poor Laws for Ireland. The first two volumes contain the 14 reports from the select committee on the Poor Laws, together with the minutes of evidence, as well as appendices and indexes. The thrid volume contains the 6 reports from the select committee of the House of Lords appointed to inquire into the operation of the Irish poor law, and the expediency of making any amendment in its enactments, together with minutes of evidence, appendices, and an index. Crucial to understanding the Great Famine, these volumes illustrate contemporary British political though relative to Ireland, as well as highlighting the extraordinary suffering the people of this island went through during the period. In maroon library cloth, with ex-libris markings, with leather labels. For further information contact Tomás Kenny.

Hardcover. 1st edition. Errata (2 lines) on p. [8]. 180 p. 17 cm. Bookplate on inside cover, Ex Libris. Contemporary cloth-backed boards. Binding a little loose. Light spotting, occasionally not so light. Covers a little rubbed. Antiquarian. The author specifically points out to the reader in his introduction that his narrative confines itself more especially to a consideration of natural objects, and the incidental events of travel. He sailed from New York for the Mediterranean, visiting Naples, Palermo, Syracuse, Malta, Messina, the Vulcanian Islands, before returning to Naples. He seems to studiously avoid what he terms artificial wonders. In the penultimate chaper he recounts the tale of an earlier visit to Scotland where he fell in company with another traveller obsessed with often macabre stories of people being buried alive. Some of these tales the author recounts in this chapter

Hardcover. 'Written originally in Latin by the famous civilian Francis Hotoman, in the year 1574. And translated into English by the author of the Account of Denmark. The first edition in this form of the first major work of political significance emanating from the religious conflicts which created so much hatred in sixteenth century France. Written originally in Latin the work proffesses to show, with the aid of history, that monarchy should be elective and constitutional. The translation was by Robert, Viscount Moleswort and the book first appeared in English during 1711. This edition contains an entirely new preface by Molesworth having been extended by some thirty pages. The preface was reprinted in 1775 under the title 'The Principles of a Real Whig.' 2nd Edition in English. Contemporary panelled-calf expertly re-backed. Some pencil notes throughout, but it remains an extremely good copy. Very scarce. Published 1721
