“On a bright summer’s morning in 1976, two gallant young gentlemen presented themselves before the counter of our bookshop in High Street, Galway. As Mother spoke to them it emerged that each of them had just had his first book published, one a novel and the other a collection of short stories, by a new press called Co-op Books which they themselves along with some friends had set up in Dublin. They were on a selling mission to Galway and wanted to know if we would be interested in stocking copies.
Solas na bhFlaitheas dá h-Anam uasal lúcháireach. It was with sadness we learned this week of the death of Terry Wogan, a friend of Kennys, pictured here in happier times with the late Maureen Kenny. This image was taken at a Bord Fáilte event where both Terry and Maureen had been named as unofficial ambassadors for Ireland. The promotion of Ireland was a thing they both did so well! May they both Rest in Peace.
Kennys Bookshop goes 'Over the Edge' for Culture Night 2015.
Galway writers group 'Over The Edge' is holding two special Culture Night open-mics - one for fiction writers, the other for poets - with prizes for the best readers, at Kennys Bookshop on Friday, September 18th.The open mic for fiction writers starts at 4pm. Almost 3,000 shops have been nominated for awards. Now, the Irish Times have whittled the competition down to a shortlist of 100 - and Kennys.ie is one of the remaining 6 in the 'Best Online Shop' category.

The recently announced Man Booker Prize Longlist of 13 sees nominees from Ireland, Nigeria, New Zealand and India as well as the UK. The competition was opened up to all writers in the English language during 2014 - effectively lifting the bar on US writers - and this year this pays dividends in the inclusion of no fewer than 5 US nominees.Previously only writers from the UK, the British Commonwealth and Ireland were eligible.
