Roald Dahl's visit to Kennys Bookshop, Galway 1987
In this, the centenary year of Roald Dahl's birth, we are reminded of the memorable 1987 visit the author paid to Galway and to Kennys Bookshop in particular.
The Bishop and 'that' book
Michael Browne was Bishop of Galway for almost 40 years. Physically, he was a big man, quite imperious in his manner. As children growing up, we were fearful of him. He was intimidating, his Episcopal signature was a cross followed by his name, so to many he was known as “Cross Michael”. He was deeply conservative, he insisted on segregated bathing in Salthill (A family Resort), ‘Men Only’ in Blackrock whereas the beach a couple of hundred yards away was known as “The Ladies”. Ne’er the twain could meet when he was around.

Kennys Bookshop won the The Marketing Institute's All Ireland Small Business Marketing Award at a prestigious gala dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Dublin last night.
The coveted All Ireland Marketing (AIM) Awards are the undisputed showcase of business achievement by Irish marketing professionals. The Award is a huge coup for Kennys online bookstore, Kennys.ie, which ships books for free from Galway to over 100 countries worldwide.
Books for Hospice
Galway Hospice in partnership with Kennys.ie will run its “Books for Hospice” event again on Friday and Saturday, May 13th and 14th. The initiative has raised over 28,000 euro since its inception in 2014, with a long term target of 100,000 euro.
Irish Independent, 100 Years Ago Today (6th May, 1916-2016)
Just this week it was our great fortune to come across this rare original copy of The Irish Independent, published on this day exactly 100 years ago, May 6th 1916.
It details the aftermath of the Easter Rising 1916, with many articles regarding executions of leaders as well as public notices and advertisements showing the practical impact of the unrest.
A very fragile item, it is for sale at only €150 (as is, contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.), but we thought it was worth sharing to a wider audience in the meantime. A piece of real historical and social importance.
