Galway Advertiser Campaign to ask people to shop local this Christmas.. " For us, this campaign is not just about the local businesses but also about our local communities. Our businesses are at the heart of our local communities, and if they are suffering, so too are our communities. There are many ways in which shopping local assists our communities; the more obvious areas such as the maintaining and creation of local jobs, and the less obvious areas such as the support for local clubs, organisations and charities, which these local businesses provide. Following the success of Des Kenny's 'Youth Poetry Salons' at Kennys, Gerry Hanberry's Youth Poety Group (Coláiste Éinde) faced off against Skylight Poets in a monster poetry reading. This event was also open to all comers – so aspiring poets brought new work to read.... we were joined by Galway Mayor Cllr.

I picked up the comedian Stewart Lee's new book, and read it cover to cover in only a couple of days - and it is like nothing I have ever read before, either style or content wise. Lee essentially brings us through selected happenings over a few years of his life, interspersed with the scripts of three stand up shows.

Margaret Atwood is being awarded an honorary Doctor in Literature in NUI Galway next Friday 24 June. The highly acclaimed Canadian author has published over 40 works of poetry, fiction and critical essays and has been shortlisted for the Booker prize five times, winning once with her novel The Blind Assassin.
Author, poet, environmentalist, academic, Atwood has a body of work spanning over 40 years, and encompassing a wide range of genres, including history, romance, feminism and science fiction.
