Galway Poetry Trail - Cúirt 2015

Active Image

In association with Galway City Council, Cúirt International Literary Festival and Kennys Bookshop, a series of commemorative plaques featuring the writing of well known Irish and International poets  have been installed around the City of Galway.

Often with a Galway twist, this series has become known as the Galway Poetry Trail and has so far included James Joyce, Mairtín Ó'Direáin, Seamus Heaney, Pádraic Ó'Conaire, Walter Macken, Louis MacNeice, Kevin Faller, Moya Cannon, Patricia Burke Brogan, W.B.Yeats, Gerald Dawe, Rita Ann Higgins, and just this week Gerard Hanberry and George Moore have been added.

We have gathered some videos relating to the Galway Poetry Trail on one playlist on Kennys YouTube channel:

A passage from "Hail and Farewell" by George Moore about himself and W.B.Yeats looking out over the Salmon Weir Bridge was selected to commemorate the sesquicentenery (150 years) of Yeats' birth. View George Moore/WB Yeats unveiling on YouTube  >>>

A new poem by Galway poet Gerry Hanberry in memory of Nora and Dilleen, two sisters who ran a late night restaurant which sold crubeens (pig's trotters) chips and 'atin and drinkin' soup.  It was affectionately known as 'The Kasbah', and is remembered by generations of Galwegians with great nostalgia.  View Gerry Hanberry Kasbah unveiling on YouTube >>>

The tributes to Nora and Dilleen continued inside Tigh Neachtain that evening.  Amongst the contributors were: Tom Kenny on Nora CrubsFran McPhail sang (and then he sang a second song!), Dicky Byrne,  Gerry Hanberry and Sean Tyrrell. If you like the above you might also be interested to know that during the 2014 Cúirt Festival a Rita Ann Higgins poem was unveiled in Eyre Square.  View this video on YouTube >>>

We wish Cúirt the best of luck with the remainder of this year's festival!
