Quick Overview

Paperback.

Happy Hooking - the Art of Anchoring rolled off the presses and onto the stands at the Southampton Boat Show in theUK. Despite the economic conditions, 111,017 visitors attended the show over the 10 days keen to experience activities on and off the water. During the show CaptainsAlex Blackwell andDaria Blackwell delivered anchoring seminars to weekend crowds as part of the Authors Live series at the Sea Theatre. They also signed books at the remarkable Kelvin Hughes exhibit.

“We were very pleased with the turnout at our anchoring seminars.” noted Alex. “The continued high level of interest in anchoring underscores its importance to boaters.” He continued, “Stopping the boat safely by anchoring is probably the most important thing a boater needs to know for their safety and enjoyment. Besides, get five boaters in a room and ask about anchors, and you are bound to start a lively discussion (otherwise described as a ‘heated debate’).”

“Anchoring is absolutely a spectator sport,” adds Daria. “As soon as a boat enters the anchorage, the binoculars come out and everyone is watching to see how well the newcomer performs! But seriously, there are so many new anchor designs and ancillary pieces of gear that are technologically sophisticated, and they are tested in ever increasing numbers of independent studies that compare the various designs. What we try to do is help people sift through theinformation so they can better understand how to apply it to their own boating needs.”

“It is also important to understand what the best techniques are for deploying the new gear. We try to impart an understanding through photos and drawings that clearly illustrate the differences and applications for each method,” explains Alex. “We also share plenty of stories through which we and our friends have learned in our many thousands of miles of ocean travels. We are firm believers that one can learn from others people’s ‘experiences’.”

“We were so pleased with the positive reviews of and reader response to our first edition that we felt we had to update the information to include the rapidly increasing number of anchor designs and independent reviews on the market. They clearly demonstrate that many new anchors are technologically advanced and deliver superior performance to some of the older designs. This is important for boaters to understand. We were particularly pleased with readers’ comments about how much they actually enjoyed reading the book. We purposefully did not make it a technical tome but rather tried to create an entertaining read,” conclude the Blackwells

The second expanded edition of Happy Hooking - the Art of Anchoring features:

More gear

More photos

More illustrations

More independent reviews

Experience from both sides of theAtlantic

Personal anecdotes based on thousands of miles of sailing and countless times anchoring

About the Authors

Daria and Alex Blackwellare lifelong sailors and passionate cruisers.
