Críostóir Ó Floinn/Christoir O'Flynn was born in Limerick in 1927. He has published over forty books in English and Irish. His plays have been produced at The Abbey, The Gate, and Damer theatres in Dublin, the Lyric in Belfast, and An Taibhdhearc, Galway. He has also written many plays for radio and television. His main work includes the novels Lá Dá Bhfaca Thú (1955); and Learairí Lios an Phúca (1965). His short story collections are Oineachlann (1968), and Sanctuary Island (1971). His drama includes In Dublin's Fair City (1959); Land of the Living (1962); Cóta Bán Chríost/The Order of Melchizedek (1966); Is É Dúirt Polonious (1967); Aggiornamento (1968); Mise Raifteri an File (1973); and An Spailpín Fánach (1988). His poetry collections include Ó Fhás go hAois (1969); Banana (1979); Aisling Dhá Abhainn (1977); Hunger Strike (1984); A Poet in Rome (1992); The Obelisk Year (1993); and Seacláidí Van Gogh (1996). His translations include Trí Gheata na Síioráiochta (from Dante's Divina Commedia, 1988); Irish Comic Poems (1994); The Bard of Thomand (1995); The Maigue Poets (1995), and Blind Raftery (1996). His memoir, There is an Isle, was published by Mercier (Cork, 1998). His awards include first prizes in all genres of Oireachtas literary competitions; the Irish Book Club Award (1955); the National Short Story 1916 Commemoration Award (1966); Douglas Hyde Memorial Award (1965); a Jacobs Television Award for Drama (1968); The Abbey Theatre Playwright's Bursary (1973), and the Oireachtas Translation Prize (1988). He lives in Co Dublin and is a member of Aosdána.
