Irish Writers - Tom Murphy

Tom Murphy was born in Tuam, Co Galway, in 1935. His works have been performed and broadcast widely in Europe and the US. He has worked closely with the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, and the Druid Theatre Company, Galway. His major plays are On the Outside (with Noel O'Donoghue); On the Inside; A Whistle in the Dark; A Crucial Week in the Life of a Grocer's Assistant; Famine; The Morning After Optimism; The Sanctuary Lamp; The Blue Macushla; Conversations on a Homecoming; The Gigli Concert; Bailegangaire; A Thief of Christmas; The Patriot Game; Too Late for Logic; The Wake (Dublin, The Abbey Theatre, 1998); and The House (The Abbey Theatre, 2000). His novel, The Seduction of Morality, was published by Little, Brown and Company in 1994. He is a a member of the Irish Academy of Letters, and Aosdána. He lives in Dublin.
