Irish Genealogy

Genealogy could quite easily be seen as the Book World's version of looking for a needle in a haystack, except that in the bibliographic world, it can be so much fun. When you think about it, most genealogy concerns the identifying of a person or persons who, among thousands if not millions of other persons had to take a boat with whatever they could to a land they knew little or nothing about. And while that person was one in an anonymous crowd, in the life of the searcher, they assume extremely important dimensions in that they are the grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather or great-grandmother, and the one human link between him or her and a genetic culture. There's an excitement here, and when the needle is finally discovered, it becomes like a shinning beacon that is both reassuring and inspiring. Of course, Genealogy is not just about discovering family roots, it is also about discovering cultural and regional roots. The study of a country's social and political history can be just as enriching as the tracking of one's family. There is more than one source to human existence.
