Performing Arts
Galway has a strong theatrical tradition. Theobald Wolfe Tone - The United Irishman, trod the boards in Kirwans Lane Theatre in 1783. More recently, An Taibhdhearc, the Irish Language Theatre was established in 1927. Some of the more famous actors associated with An Taibhdhearc are Micheal Mac Liammóir, Siobhan McKenna, Walter Macken and Brendan Behan. Indeed Thomas Kenny once starred in an Irish Language production of "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett.
In 1975, Gary Hynes, Mick Lally and Maire Mullen established Druid Theatre Company. Druid approached the classic works of Synge and Wilde with new vision and energy. It has also worked closely with contemporary playwrights including Tom Murphy, Vincent Woods and more recently Martin McDonagh.
Galway is also home to Macnas Theatre Company, who perform large-scale street theatre around the globe.
