St Nicholas' Hurling Team

17th February 2005

Now that the hurling season has begun we thought to bring you some great exponents of the game in the past. This was the Saint Nicholas' Hurling team which beat Saint Patrick's in the final of the Patrician Brothers Junior League in July 1949. Players were drawn from "The Bish" and "The Mon", and represented different areas in the city. In addition to these two, teams from Newcastle, Shantalla, Salthill and Western Stars took part. This league was like a forerunner to the Streets Leagues which started up in the mid fifties.

These are...
Back Row, left to right: Brother Fabian, the trainer; Fred Barry, Fr. Griffin Road; Michael Joyce; Dermot Dooley; Jimmy Clancy; Eamon Mitchell; Martin McGrath, Woodquay; Alfie Smyth; Anthony Folan; John McGrath, Martin's brother.
Front Row: Mattie Beatty; Jimmy Joyce; Ivor Carroll; Jimmy Tyrrell, whose brother Jackie once did a trial with Manchester United; James "Hockey" Nestor; Michael Conneely; Frank Cox; Michael Lydon; Michael Beatty.
Thanks to Noel Fay, Castlelawn Heights.
