Old Galway

Saint Patrick's Choir

March 1st, 2007

The week before last, this column featured the Patrician Musical Society who have been entertaining Galwegians with their singing for over 50 years now. Our singers in today's photograph cannot claim that longevity, but for five years they were undefeated in the Feis Ceoil in Galway. They won the O'Doherty Cup for plain chant five times in a row, and usually against strong opposition such as the UCG choir which was trained by Maire Ni Scolai. These girls were trained by Father James Walsh, who was a teacher in Saint Mary's College. He was eventually transferred to Parish work, and Patricia Hehir took over the coaching of the choir. They were based in St. Patrick's Church, and they wore green ties and green hair ribbons.the colour of Saint Patrick. There were three sets of sisters in the group. The photograph was taken in front of the Grotto beside St Patrick's Church.

The choristers are, front row, left to right; Angela Grealish, Bohermore; Anne Tyrrell, Magdalen Terrace; Joan Gilroy, Forster Street; Angela Cummins, College Road; Kathleen Hehir, Magdalen Terrace; Mary Tyrrell.

Second row; Anne Gilroy; Bridie Hogan, Prospect Hill; Mary Gilroy; Mary Hughes, Prospect Hill; Patricia Grey, Bohermore; Bernadette Deeley, Magdalen Terrace; Bridie Glynn.

In front, holding the trophy is Brendan O'Brien.

Our thanks to Mary Gilroy-Johnson of Tralee for today's photograph.
